The Born Again Meaning, How To Know You Are Born Again?
Human beings, made in God’s image, are presently the highest physical life form on earth. Angels, who are spirits, are on a somewhat higher life form than man (Hebrews 2:7).
Long ago, God created heaven and the angels (Colossians 1:16). There was no created universe with planets and stars at that stage. Angels were not created to be like robots that are programmed mechanisms.
The definition of love requires choice. Therefore a robot cannot love (unlike what was portrayed in the film Bicentennial Man). For God to experience the love of angels, He gave them freedom of choice.
The pinnacle of God’s creation was an angel, called Lucifer – perfect at his creation. He was beautiful, brilliant in mind, a superb cherub, covered with precious stones. He was allowed to enter God’s garden and his holy mountain (Ezekiel 28:11-15).
Lucifer, whose name means son of the morning (Isaiah 14:12), had access to God’s intimate presence. Then evil was found in him and He began thinking of dethroning God (Ezekiel 28:15; Isaiah 14:13). As a result he, and the angels that followed him, were cast out of heaven.
Did God, who can see into the future, know beforehand that this was to happen? Was it intended to be an illustration to those whom God would later involve in his plan?
One thing was clear: the pinnacle of created beings could not be trusted. Thus no created being can be trusted. If God wanted children in His house that would be faithful throughout eternity, they had to be something other than created beings. No human being, no created being, can please or impress God by his own works.
Satan was created by God (but was not created evil). Angels were created, as was Adam and Eve. What beings are not created? We will get to that later. But first we must consider the nature of man.
CHAPTER 2 WHAT IS A HUMAN BEING?
It is important for our purposes to take a closer look at man. What is man? The first man, Adam, was created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). There will be theologians who will differ, but God has a form and appearance, and if that be the case, we believe that the human body is in accordance with the form of God’s appearance. There is however, another similarity with God. God is spirit. Unlike animals, man also has a spirit – man is actually a spirit being within a fleshly body.
I have for many years viewed man as a dichotomous being: (1) spirit/soul and (2) body. This was based on the fact that in the Old Testament spirit and soul are used interchangeably as if they are one and the same. God later opened my eyes to see that progressive revelation is applicable here.
What does that mean? It means that with the passing of time God revealed and clarified certain truths to the latter writers of Bible books. It was especially to Paul that God revealed certain mysteries (Galatians 1:15-16; Colossians 1:25-27). In
1 Thessalonians 5:23 Paul writes: ...I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. *
* The King James Version is used throughout unless where indicated otherwise.
Here a distinction is made between soul and spirit and the three elements of man mentioned in the same sentence. Notice the order in which they are mentioned:
We will revert to this order, later. The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews says in 4:12: For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit… (New King James Version)
Once again a distinction is made between soul and spirit. The Word is so sharp that it distinguishes between the two. In 1 Thessalonians 5:23 the order is given as (1) spirit, (2) soul and (3) body. The spirit of man is the essence of his humanity – the deepest part of his being. It is at the spirit level where his identity resides.
The deepest consciousness of man is potentially seated in his spirit. See 1 Corinthians 2:11: For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? If you’re still not convinced of this truth, read on, because it will become clearer as we continue. The three components can be pictured thus:
There is one problem with regard to the spirit of man, which affects all of mankind. Let’s have a look at that.
