The Born Again Meaning, How To Know You Are Born Again?

                                   Johann Grobler

INTRODUCTION

Some Christians say they are “born again.” Others say they are not sure, whilst others say they don’t actually know what it means. Some say it happens when you are baptized, or when you are accepted into your church denomination, or when you are confirmed as a church member. Then there are those who say it is when you have a certain spiritual experience.

There is clearly much confusion on this subject. Jesus alluded to its importance when He said: “unless a person is born again, he will neither see nor enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:3,5). How can it be that there is so much ignorance and misconception on such a cardinal topic?

This book attempts to remove the misconceptions by giving a clear and accurate exposition as to what being born again, or re-birthed, is all about. It also reveals how you can know if you are born again. This book contains some of the most important information that can change your life, if you are willing to accept it.

Being born again is the most important event in any person’s life. Its implications are everlasting and of such a magnitude that words fail to convey a full understanding of the event. There is a “mystery” associated with the spiritual birthing. This “mystery” is not a hidden secret; it is something that only the Holy Spirit can explain. To understand the “mystery” you need to understand something about God’s character and God’s plan for mankind. For that you need to go back to the beginning… In chapter 1 we begin at the beginning…

CHAPTER 1

Long, long ago, there was nothing but God. Before time and before anything was created, there was only God – He alone. He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end (Revelation 21:6).

There are four qualities that were true of God in the beginning, are true now, and will be true of God throughout eternity. The first quality is that God is in essence spirit (John 4:24). There is evidently no matter, no molecular substance in God’s being. He is spirit. That does not necessarily mean that He has no form. The Bible talks about a spiritual body (1 Corinthians 15:44) and it mentions God’s body parts: His arm, hand, back, face, mouth etc. (Exodus 33:23; Jeremiah 21:5). God, Who is the Beginning and the End, is spirit. Therefore spirit is the highest form of existence. Matter and flesh are lower forms of existence.

The second quality in God, that we need to keep in mind, is God is not a trinity: Deut 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: Mark 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: Gal 3:20  Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. The third quality in God is that He is love (1 John 4:8). People sing about the love between a man and a woman and it is the theme of many lyrics, poems, novels and films. But God was from the beginning love and He is the source of all true love (Romans 5:5; James 1:17). One may add that the love between humans (Greek: phileo) is not on the same level as the selfless godly love (Greek: agape) of God.

Try to picture the beginning, when there was only God, who is love. If we accept that there is a perfect love bond between the three “Personalities” of the God-head, it would appear that God’s love is so overflowing, that He desired to share his perfect quality of love with many other persons. These other persons would become part of his family and would love Him throughout eternity.

God the Father desired to have His house in heaven filled with His own birthed sons (John 14:2). For the Word (which is in the Son of God), His desire was primarily to please the Father, and apparently also to be married to a darling wife and enjoy a most intimate love relationship with her. Much like the fairy-tales that normally end: “… and they lived together, happily ever after…” The function of the Holy Spirit(which is from God) is firstly to be a teacher, also to comfort believers and convict the unsaved (John 14:26; 16:13). Christ after resurrection has become the Holy Spirit.

One thing is sure: if God is love and the source of all love, his love is infinitely stronger and more intense than the deepest fatherly love, motherly love, romantic love or marital love ever experienced or to be experienced on this planet.

The fourth quality of God is that He is life. In Him is life (John 1:1) and He is life (John 11:25). God the Father has life in Himself and He determined that the Son (Christ) also have life in Himself (John 5:26).

God is the highest form of existence, the life that God possesses, is the highest form of life. We observe in nature that there are different life forms. The lowest life form is that of plants. Plants have no consciousness. Then come fish and birds that have a measure of self-consciousness and awareness of their environment. Then we get animals that, can to a degree, think and make decisions. Next in line are human beings. continuing next page………
